On the last night of a four-day backpacking trip through Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, a soft aurora glow lingered above Au Sable Lighthouse. Earlier that day, a docent had mentioned that the northern lights might be visible that night. By nightfall, the storm had eased, but there was still color in the sky.

I’d carried roughly ten pounds of camera equipment along the trail, and the wind that night had me hanging a two-liter water bottle from my tripod to help steady it. I was glad I’d brought the extra weight.
