Captured on August 24, 2023, Ash Over Saint Joseph was photographed as smoke from distant Canadian wildfires drifted south across the Great Lakes, transforming the evening sky over St. Joseph into a deep burning red. As the sun descended toward the horizon, the North Pier Lighthouse stood in silhouette beneath a sky that glowed like embers above Lake Michigan.
For many along the shoreline that night, the air carried the faint scent of smoke and the sunset burned with an intensity rarely seen on the lake. As the sun aligned behind the outer lighthouse and slowly faded below the horizon, the familiar pier was briefly framed beneath a sky of fire.

Captured on January 20, 2026, Frozen Vigil preserves a moment that lasted only minutes. After days of wind, spray, and deep winter cold, the St. Joseph lighthouse stood encased in thick ice, its railings and supports transformed into frozen sculptures. As the storm clouds briefly parted above the pier, the northern lights quietly emerged. Soft bands of violet and rose drifted across the sky behind the lighthouse, illuminating the frozen structure in an otherworldly glow. For a short time, the restless waters of Lake Michigan fell silent beneath the aurora, and the lighthouse continued its steady watch through the cold.

Captured on May 11, 2024, Storm Over Mackinac was photographed during one of the most powerful geomagnetic storms in decades. After clouds obscured the sky the previous night, clear conditions returned over the Straits of Mackinac just as the aurora intensified once again across the northern United States.
As the Mackinac Bridge glowed against the dark water below, tall curtains of green and yellow aurora rose above the towers, illuminating the night sky. For a brief time, one of Michigan’s most recognizable landmarks stood beneath a rare celestial storm.
